Company History

Yardney was founded by Michel Yardney in 1944. Its full corporate name was Yardney Electric Corporation and it was located in New York City. Yardney was among the first companies in the world to successfully produce and commercialize rechargeable silver-zinc and magnesium silver chloride batteries.

In 1969, the company was acquired by Whittaker Corporation.

In 1970, Yardney's corporate offices and operations were moved to a single 260,000 square foot facility located in Pawcatuck, Connecticut. During the 1970s and 1980s, the company expanded its product line to include, zinc-air batteries, nickel-zinc batteries, nickel-hydrogen batteries and lithium thionyl-chloride batteries.

In 1990, the company was privately acquired by Mr. Richard M. Scibelli from Whittaker, and  the corporate name was changed to Yardney Technical Products (YTP). In 1995 Ener-Tek International was formed and became the technology-based parent holding company of Yardney. Ener-Tek holds over 200 patents encompassing many aspects of battery technology. Ener-Tek is AS-9100 compliant and qualifies as a veteran owned small business.

Since its acquisition, YTP acquired the aluminum-air technology from Alcan Ltd. and Whittaker Corporation's Power Systems Division which specialized in reserve silver-zinc batteries for tactical missiles.

As part of the rationalization of its product line, Yardney divested the lithium thionyl-chloride and nickel battery product lines and has invested heavily in Li-ion technology.

In 1995, Lithion was incorporated as an Ener-Tek subsidiary to commercialize rechargeable lithium-ion technology research activities conducted since 1992.

From 2001 through 2005, Yardney Technical Products (which includes Alupower) and Lithion had been operating as separate divisions of Ener-Tek. Both divisions focused on providing high energy density batteries to a wide variety of applications. To ensure customer expectations were met or exceeded, each division had its own manufacturing Engineering and R&D teams.

In late 2005, all divisions were brought under the leadership of a single President/COO, Mr. Vince Yevoli.  This reorganization leveraged the many years of experience found on the Silver Zinc side with the emerging technology base and innovativeness of the Lithium-ion chemistry. YTP maintains a unique advantage over both it’s Silver and Lithium-ion competition by combining this valuable knowledge-base of a wide assortment of demanding battery applications and options for achieving mission success.

In cooperation with the Department of Defense,  NASA, and Major Defense Contractors, Yardney has designed, developed and delivered high energy density batteries in high profile programs such as Minuteman III ICBM, Delta II/IV and Atlas V, the Mars Explorer Rover missions, the USAF B-2 Bomber and Global Hawk aircraft, and the US Navy Advanced SEAL Delivery System (ASDS).
