Electronics Engineer

Job Function:
The candidate will work with Yardney Battery Engineering Teams to perform a diverse mix of hardware, firmware and software tasks related to the design, development, test, qualification and production support of electronic assemblies used to manage the charge and discharge of Lithium-Ion Batteries.  This is an exciting, full task spectrum, A to Z, opportunity, that will enable the individual contributor to exercise their proficiency in all aspects of delivering electronic control systems for  Lithium-Ion battery assemblies used in various Military,  Aerospace and commercial applications.  The position is located in Pawcatuck, CT.

Job Requirements:
The appropriate individual will be expected to:

  1. Perform analog and digital hardware design and design analysis tasks for:
    1. Analog signal conditioning and A/D conversion of various physical parameters such as DC Voltage, Current, Temperature and Time.
    2. Various DC-DC converter topologies for use in battery charging applications.
    3. Control of high current conduction paths from tens to hundreds of amperes for both battery charge and battery discharge.
    4. Parts selection, screening and cost estimation in a military / aerospace environment where stringent DSCC Military & Space rated component standards are a requirement.
    5. Development, documentation and Customer presentation of circuit performance characteristics including Failure, Worst Case, Radiation, Reliability, and Derating Analyses.
  2. Perform hardware support tasks including debug of existing assemblies, selection and justification of alternate components or alternate component sources, qualification testing, documentation updates and corrections, and other hardware related tasks as may be required.
  3. Assist in the design of new firmware and code, document, test and deliver new firmware for new hardware applications.
  4. Develop structured firmware/software in a style that is well documented, readily supportable and complies with Military software safety standards.
  5. Analyze existing code and reverse engineer previously written firmware.
    1. Provide behavioral and performance documentation based on existing firmware.
    2. Recommend and implement firmware changes and firmware qualification testing to correct behavioral or performance deficiencies in existing firmware.
    3. Design and implement firmware changes required to implement new features and capabilities in existing battery management systems.
    4. Maintain code release and all types of code documentation.
  6. Develop bench and automated test fixtures for use during development and production test of battery management electronics.

  1. Modify existing and write new Windows based applications to:
    1. Communicate with battery electronics and provide current status of battery electronics in a GUI environment.
    2. Control custom automated test systems.

Required Skills:
The individual must possess:

  1. Demonstrable analog and digital hardware design skills, a full appreciation for the hardware development process and a full willingness to support full documentation of all design activity in narrative, graphical, technical analysis and product data forms.
  2. Demonstrable skills in reading and understanding firmware written in C for micro-controllers while using an Integrated Development Environment.
  3. Demonstrable ability and experience with analyzing and debugging systems involving hardware and firmware interactions.
  4. The ability to read, modify, write software executable in a Windows development and operating environment.
  5. Demonstrable skill and experience using electronic schematic capture tools.
  6. Sufficient knowledge of Printed Circuit Board layout techniques to provide guidance to PC Board designers in the design and layout of printed circuit boards containing power, precision DC analog and digital circuitry.

Recommended Skills / Qualifications:
Extra consideration will be given to individuals who possess:US Citizenship.

  • Minimum of ten years of related design / development experience.
  • Experience designing Battery Management Systems.
  • Hardware design / development experience utilizing analog instrumentation, power supply and uController circuits.
  • Prior Mil – Aerospace Design / Development experience.
  • Software / Firmware design / development experience using software test and quality gauging tools such as VectorCAST, Parasoft, PC Lint, etc.
  • Experience using ORCAD Capture.
  • Experience using hardware analysis tools such as PSPICE, LTSPICE, etc.
